Charging Your EV in Hot Weather: What to Keep in Mind this Summer

When temperatures rise, everyday life with an electric vehicle changes too. The interior heats up more quickly, the air conditioning runs more often and the battery works under different conditions than it would on a mild day. That does not mean EV drivers need to worry, but it does make sense to plan charging sessions a little more consciously. Even in high temperatures, you can charge your EV reliably when you know what matters. With the right habits, you stay flexible, protect the battery and reach your destination comfortably, even on hot days.

Why high temperatures can affect charging

When you charge your EV in summer, the vehicle is not only managing the flow of electricity into the battery. At the same time, its thermal management system helps prevent the battery from getting too warm. This matters because batteries work best within a specific temperature range.

If the car has been parked in direct sunlight for a long time or has just been driven hard on the motorway, the battery may heat up further. In these situations, the vehicle may automatically reduce the charging power. This means charging can take a little longer, but it also protects the battery from excessive strain. A different charging pattern in summer is therefore usually not a problem. It is often a protective function of the battery management system.

Charging your EV in summer: How to make it work day to day

If you want to charge your EV properly in hot weather, it helps to choose the right location and time. Shaded charging spaces, underground car parks or locations where the vehicle is not exposed to direct sunlight for long periods are especially practical. This reduces thermal stress on the battery and also stops the interior from heating up unnecessarily.

Timing can also make a noticeable difference in summer. If it fits your routine, try charging in the morning or evening to avoid the strongest midday heat. Forward planning is helpful too. Do not wait until the battery is almost empty. Instead, use convenient charging opportunities during your day. This helps you avoid unnecessary stress and keeps the battery within a moderate state of charge.

What matters when fast charging on hot days

Fast charging is a practical option in summer when you are on the move and want to get going again quickly. On hot days, however, it is worth timing the charging session carefully. An EV usually charges most efficiently in the middle battery range, around 20 to 80%. After that, charging power often drops because the vehicle protects the battery and tops up the final percentage points more slowly. If you want to fast charge in hot weather, it can therefore make sense to charge more briefly and more strategically, rather than charging the battery fully every time.

With JOLT’s urban ultra-fast charging stations, these short charging stops can be easily integrated into everyday life, for example while shopping, during an appointment or on the way into the city.

How to protect your battery in summer

If you want to protect your EV battery in summer, simple habits make the biggest difference. Where possible, avoid leaving the vehicle parked for many hours in direct sunlight with an almost fully charged battery. If you are not leaving until the next day, it can be useful to schedule the charging session. This way, the battery only reaches the desired charge level shortly before departure and does not stay fully charged for longer than necessary.

Preconditioning is also helpful, provided your vehicle offers this function. It allows the interior to be cooled before you set off while the car is still connected to the charging station. Depending on the model, the battery can also be prepared. This gives you more comfort when you start driving, reduces energy use on the road and helps you use your EV more efficiently in warm weather.
