No Surprises – Everything is Clearly Defined at JOLT
We untangle the rate jungle – so you know what matters
Charging an electric vehicle can be confusing for newcomers due to the variety of rates, charging speeds, and payment options. Here’s an overview to help you understand the differences between AC and DC charging, the benefits of various charging cards, and how to find the best rate for your needs.
AC Charging – Slow, but Sufficient for Long Parking
- Type: Alternating Current
- Power: Typically 3.7–22 kW
- Charging Time: 3–8 hours for full charge
- Price: approx. €0.35–€0.55/kWh
- Typical Use: Office, home, or public places during longer stays
- Note: Slower, as the power is converted in the vehicle. Not ideal for quick top-ups.
DC Charging – Fast Charging on the Go
- Type: Direct Current
- Power: 50–150 kW
- Charging Time: 30–60 minutes for 80%
- Price: approx. €0.49–€0.69/kWh
- Typical Use: While shopping, in the city, short stops
- Advantage: Direct to the battery – much faster than AC charging
HPC Charging – Ultra-Fast High Power Charging
- Type: High Power DC (often called “ultra-fast charging”)
- Power: from 150 kW, up to 320 kW at JOLT
- Charging Time: 10–20 minutes for 80%
- Price: approx. €0.59–€0.79/kWh, often with night/load-based pricing – from €0.45 at JOLT
- Typical Use: Ideal for people without a home charger who need quick energy in everyday city life
- Perfect for: Urban residents without wallboxes, commuters, urban EV drivers
Charging Pros Use a Combo of Cards:
Experienced EV drivers often rely on a primary charging card accepted across Europe, plus specific providers for special cases. For example, they use JOLT for quick charging in cities, thanks to its speed and prime locations – offering flexibility and cost-efficiency.
Finding the Right Plan:
The variety of tariffs can be overwhelming, especially for newcomers. Many providers have complex models with varying prices for AC and DC, idle fees, or roaming charges. That’s why knowing your use case is key:
- City residents without home charging: Public fast DC chargers with no base fees are ideal.
- Frequent drivers: Benefit from lower prices at highway fast chargers.
- Occasional users: A no-monthly-fee plan might suit you best.
Conclusion:
Choosing the right mix of charging options and the best tariff depends on your individual driving habits. Learn the AC/DC differences, check provider terms, and use multiple cards for flexible and efficient charging.
