The Battery Management System as the Key to the Urban Mobility Transition

Electric mobility is profoundly changing our city centres, but the grid infrastructure must keep pace. Ultra-fast charging requires enormous amounts of energy in a very short time. To ensure this power can be drawn safely, efficiently, and without overloading the grid, every modern lithium-ion battery requires a higher-level control unit: the battery management system.

It acts as a digital brain in the background, protecting the sensitive cells and enabling pioneering charging solutions for urban areas. At JOLT, this technology controls our battery-buffered fast charging stations to bring highly dynamic charging directly into city centres.

How the BMS Function Ensures Battery Efficiency

The primary BMS function is to monitor the condition of the entire energy storage system in real time and regulate it with mathematical precision. A modern battery management system takes on tasks that go far beyond mere charging and discharging.

The system continuously records two fundamental parameters:

  • Monitoring the exact charging status via the State of Charge (SoC)
  • Analyzing the general health and aging condition via the State of Health (SoH)

Furthermore, the software controls the thermal management. Since extreme temperatures cause lasting damage to the cells, active temperature regulation ensures that the battery always remains within its optimal operating window.

Should the sensors register critical values, the system intervenes immediately. It instantly throttles the currents or initiates an automatic safety shutdown to protect people and technology without compromise.

A critical thermal runaway—uncontrolled overheating—is thus consistently prevented. Equally important is cell balancing: this automatic cell equalization prevents cell drift by distributing the charge evenly across all cells, thereby permanently securing the maximum overall capacity.

Why the Battery Management System Protects During Continuous Use

Precise battery management in an EV protects the battery from premature degradation during everyday driving. However, this principle is just as significant directly at the charging station itself. When electric vehicles charge at high power, massive currents flow to enable ultra-fast charging. Drivers can easily view the charging status of their EV in the JOLT app.

The charging station‘s battery management system continuously monitors these processes to immediately block deep discharges, overloads, or short circuits. It protects the installed hardware and ensures consistently high reliability of the charge points in continuous urban use.

Smart Battery Storage Control for Stable Power Grids

In practice, the rapid expansion of urban charging infrastructure often fails due to the capacity limits of local power grids. However, a lengthy expansion of the grid infrastructure costs valuable years. JOLT resolves this conflict through innovative fast charging stations such as the MerlinOne or the ChargeBox, which feature integrated battery storage. With an output of up to 320 kW, vehicles can recharge enough power for a 200 km range in just 10 minutes.

The integrated control of the battery storage masters this task via highly efficient peak shaving:

  • The battery management system slowly charges the station’s internal 200 kWh storage when the low-voltage grid is experiencing low demand anyway.
  • As soon as a vehicle starts the charging process, the buffered energy is released instantly, without placing a peak load on the local power grid.
  • As an intelligent energy storage system, JOLT’s network thus stabilizes the power grids in real time and directly balances out the volatile production from renewable energies.
