A successful electric car holiday starts the day before departure. Many people simply charge the battery to full overnight at their wallbox. But beware: the battery cells suffer if the car sits in the driveway at 100% for hours. If you want to protect the battery, only bring the State of Charge (SoC) to its maximum shortly before setting off.
Top tip: use the timer function in the car. This ensures the battery is full exactly when you turn the key. Experienced EV drivers avoid leaving their cars sitting around fully charged to protect the battery’s long-term lifespan.
For setting off straight from your front door, 100% is perfect for optimising your EV range. However, out on the open road for a long journey, things are a bit different. If you want to make efficient progress, choose a well-thought-out charging strategy for long distances. Here, it is usually smarter to only charge the battery up to 80% during stopovers.
Why? Beyond this point, the charging speed drops drastically in almost every model. Two quick top-ups at an ultra-fast charging station will save you significantly more time than a tedious wait for a full charge.
A relaxing trip requires good tools. Reliable apps factor in your current consumption and automatically find the best stops. Keep a specific lookout for High Power Charging (HPC).
To ensure things go really quickly at the charging point, the battery needs to be at the right temperature. Simply enter the station as a destination in your sat nav. The car will then bring the battery up to operating temperature while you drive, allowing you to charge immediately at the maximum kW output.
Nobody likes sitting in traffic during the holidays. If you do get stuck, stay relaxed: the air conditioning and heating consume very little energy when stationary. Instead, use the time to find fast-charging stations away from the busy motorway. You can do this easily and stress-free in the JOLT app.
A small detour into town is often worth it. This is exactly where JOLT provides the solution. Our inner-city infrastructure is designed for speed. With up to 320 kW of power, you can add up to 200 km of range in just 10 minutes. Grab an espresso in the city centre, plug in briefly, and you’re back on the road.
Besides just fast charging, there are other simple ways to increase efficiency on the road. A fully loaded holiday car weighs significantly more and consumes energy accordingly. It is therefore best to pack heavy luggage low down and in the middle of the vehicle. Bear in mind to that roof boxes or bike racks worsen aerodynamics and noticeably drain battery capacity.
When charging your EV before a holiday, you should also check the tyre pressure straight away. Increase it according to the manufacturer’s specifications for a full load – you can usually find the correct values on a sticker inside the door frame. This lowers rolling resistance, preserves the battery, and helps you to optimise your EV range. This way, you travel more efficiently and reach your destination completely safely.
To ensure you are prepared and don’t experience any expensive roaming surprises, have a quick look at these points:
☐ Check whether charging cards and tariffs work abroad.
☐ Activate preconditioning in the sat nav before your charging stop.
☐ Look for alternative charging points in case the main routes are overcrowded.
☐ Use flexible payment options at the stations.
Those who rely on modern HPC technology arrive stress-free. It is sustainable and clears your mind for the holiday.
