An electric car is only as clean as the electricity you charge it with. That is exactly why the question is worth asking: how much green electricity really goes into your charging session? Between the green promise at the charging station and the reality in the power grid, there is often more to it than many drivers assume. This article explains how green charging power is verified, how to recognise real quality and why green electricity charging is more than a label.
First, an important clarification: the term green electricity is not legally protected in Germany. In the physical grid, green electricity cannot be separated from conventional electricity anyway. As soon as wind power, photovoltaics or a coal-fired power station feeds in, everything mixes into a shared electricity mix. The electricity flowing from a charging station is therefore always a mixture in physical terms.
Green charging power is, for this reason, a matter of accounting. A supplier commits to proving an equivalent amount of renewable energy for the volume of electricity delivered. How clean your charging power is therefore does not depend on the cable, but on the balance behind it. For context: in 2025, more than half of Germany’s gross electricity consumption came from renewable energy. A green electricity tariff goes beyond this average and certifies a supply that is 100% renewable.
The key instrument for this proof is the guarantee of origin (GO). A guarantee of origin confirms that a certain amount of electricity, usually one megawatt hour, was generated from renewable energy. These certificates are managed by the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) in the guarantee-of-origin register (HKNR). The basis is the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED), implemented among other things through the German Energy Industry Act.
Since 2013, one clear rule has applied: an energy supplier may only label electricity as green electricity if it cancels guarantees of origin in the register for the volume delivered. This prevents what is known as double marketing, where the same green kilowatt hour would be sold more than once. Worth knowing: guarantees of origin are decoupled from the physical flow of electricity. They prove the origin as a matter of accounting, not the specific electricity flowing through your cable at the moment of charging.
One detail on the side builds additional trust: in Germany, the German Environment Agency does not issue guarantees of origin for electricity that has already been supported through the Renewable Energy Sources Act. This rules out any double counting.
Guarantees of origin are sensible and legally sound. On their own, however, they say little about whether your green electricity is advancing the energy transition. The reason: a large share of the certificates used in Germany is imported, above all from Norway, Iceland or Austria. On paper, this means even conventional electricity can be upgraded into a green product with cheaply purchased certificates.
For a real contribution, another criterion therefore matters: additionality. If part of the price flows into building new renewable energy installations, additional green electricity is created. This is precisely where high-quality green electricity separates itself from mere labelling. For your charging power, this means that not every green promise at the charging station carries the same weight.
Independent quality seals offer guidance. Two labels are regarded as particularly strict, and both the German Environment Agency and consumer advice centres consider them meaningful:
Be wary of mere test marks that only confirm the guarantees of origin without requiring the addition of new installations. In such cases, look for additions such as a new-installation quota or support for renewable energy. A self-designed logo without independent auditing, by contrast, is not a mark of quality.
So far, green electricity has usually been accounted for on an annual basis. This means your green charging power is balanced across the year, not necessarily generated in the hour you charge. A forward-looking approach aims to change that. In a pilot project, LichtBlick, Granular Energy and decarbon1ze issued granular guarantees of origin on a quarter-hourly basis at the first charging stations. This makes it possible to trace which installation the charging power comes from and whether it was generated at the same time as the charging session. For the credibility of green electricity charging, this is an important step forward, even if binding standards are still taking shape here.
In addition, you can charge greener yourself by timing your charging sessions for periods with plenty of wind and solar power. The higher the share of renewable energy in the grid, the cleaner the kilowatt hour you charge is in real terms.
For site partners, fleet operators and municipalities, the origin of the charging power has long been more than a question of image. It feeds directly into the carbon footprint and into ESG targets. Anyone who demonstrably offers green charging power at their site strengthens their own sustainability profile and becomes more attractive to environmentally conscious customers.
