Ultra-fast charging without grid extension

Why grid expansion is not always necessary for fast chargers

Fast charging is often considered demanding on the power grid. Many companies therefore assume that new fast-charging stations automatically require expensive, time-consuming grid expansion. In practice, however, that is not always true. Modern technology makes it possible to install powerful charging points even where the existing grid connection is limited. Intelligent battery storage plays a central role: it stores energy temporarily and delivers it to electric vehicles at high power when needed.

Fast charging without grid expansion: how does it work?

Conventional fast charging requires the power grid to supply very high power for short periods. This is where bottlenecks often arise. When several vehicles charge at once, power demand can increase significantly. Without a suitable solution, thicker cables, new transformer stations or extensive excavation work would be needed.

Fast charging without grid upgrades takes a different approach. The charging station continuously draws electricity from the existing grid and stores it in a battery. When a vehicle starts charging, the battery releases the energy needed at high power. This delivers a fast charging experience at the point of use without requiring the grid to permanently support that peak output.

Why battery storage eases the load on the grid

Battery storage acts as a buffer between the grid and the vehicle. It draws in energy when enough capacity is available and supplies it when high power is needed at the charging point. This reduces peak loads and helps keep grid operations stable.

This is particularly relevant for sites with limited grid capacity. Instead of upgrading the entire grid connection, a battery-based solution can make better use of the existing infrastructure. That saves time, reduces construction obstacles and allows for faster implementation. At the same time, the technology supports intelligent load management, for example when renewable electricity generation fluctuates more sharply.

Ideal for charging infrastructure at urban sites

Space is particularly scarce in cities. Excavation work is complex, permits take time and stronger grid connections are not quickly available everywhere. Charging infrastructure without grid expansion is therefore especially attractive for urban sites: supermarkets, petrol stations, restaurants, car parks and commercial properties can all be equipped with charging points faster.

This offers site operators a clear advantage. They can provide their customers with a modern service without having to immerse themselves in complex grid planning. Municipalities benefit too, as public fast chargers can be made available sooner and electric mobility becomes more visible in everyday life.

Battery-buffered charging stations and the grid connection

Battery-buffered charging stations still need a grid connection, but not necessarily a particularly powerful one. A connection to the low-voltage grid is often enough because the battery handles the power peaks. Electricity therefore flows more steadily from the grid into storage, while the vehicle can charge very quickly when needed.

This is precisely where the technical difference from conventional fast chargers lies. The grid does not have to supply all the charging power on its own; instead, the system combines the available grid power with stored energy. At JOLT, we also use integrated battery storage in our urban fast-charging solutions to make ultra-fast charging easier to implement at inner-city locations.

As a JOLT site partner, you can make your location part of our fast-charging network without having to manage the planning, operation or technology yourself.

What businesses should check before installation

Even where charging without expanding the grid is possible, every site should be assessed carefully. The key factors are existing grid capacity, expected usage, available space and the charging service you want to offer. A busy customer location calls for different planning than a small car park used only occasionally.

Businesses should therefore look beyond maximum charging power. More important is an overall strategy combining technology, operations, commercial viability and user experience. Battery-based fast-charging solutions can offer a practical path: they make high-performance charging points available sooner, reduce dependence on grid expansion and bring electric mobility to the places people already visit.
