Parking at the charging station: EV rules simply explained

Parking at a charging station: everything you need to know

Electric mobility is spreading through cities and changing how we travel for good. At JOLT, we focus on enabling the transition to electric vehicles. But the rapidly growing number of EVs also raises entirely new everyday questions. Parking at a charging station in particular often creates uncertainty for drivers, businesses and location partners.

What parking rules actually apply at EV charging stations? And what should you do when the charging space you urgently need is blocked?

EV charging-bay rules: who can park, and for how long?

As a general rule, parking in a charging bay is primarily intended for active charging. Many municipalities and private operators link permission to park directly to whether electricity is flowing. To keep the charging network efficient, bear the following points in mind:

  • Always check local signs, as these set out the legally binding rules.
  • Parking is often free while charging is active, but a clear maximum parking time usually applies.
  • Once charging has finished, move your vehicle to free the space for other EV drivers.
  • Many charging providers charge so-called overstay fees if the car remains plugged in without permission after it is fully charged.

Charging station blocked? Here's what to do

It is a real frustration for any committed EV driver: a much-needed charging station blocked by a combustion-engine vehicle or an electric car that is not charging. Rather than getting upset, follow these practical steps:

  1. Stay calm and first check your app for alternative charging stations nearby. If you have time, wait a little.
  2. If you are in a private car park, for example at a supermarket or quick-service restaurant, it is best to notify the local management.
  3. In public spaces, you can contact the local parking enforcement office in exceptional cases, as unauthorized parking at a charging station is often treated as an offense and punished with a fine.
