Accelerating and simplifying the financing of EV charging infrastructure

Munich, 15 September 2021 – In response to the worldwide shortage of electric-vehicle charging infrastructure, and in line with its aim to bring ultra-fast charging stations into cities, JOLT has launched the ChargeMyCity campaign (ChargeMyCity.com) to provide 500 charging stations in 500 days. Both private and professional investors can participate in the campaign by investing in Merlin Bonds. Proceeds from the Merlin Bonds, available from as little as €100 and offering a fixed annual interest rate of 5–6%, will be used to purchase and install charging stations in selected communities. The ultra-fast chargers can fully charge an electric car in 15–30 minutes. Merlin Bonds have been approved by the German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin) and are professionally managed by EuEco.

JOLT will launch the campaign immediately in Munich (ChargeMunich.de) and then expand it to other communities in Germany, Europe and the United States. “By bringing our financing activities for ultra-fast chargers in-house, we will accelerate the investment programme while giving our end customers the opportunity to invest directly in something they need and will use,” says Marcus Jentsch, JOLT's CFO. In the coming weeks, JOLT will also launch a partner programme allowing local individuals and communities to initiate their own fundraising activities to bring ultra-fast charging stations to their neighbourhoods.

Commercial and institutional investors can invest in JOLT too. They will have the opportunity to participate in investment vehicles that develop charging infrastructure together with owners of commercial sites (such as office buildings, restaurants, supermarkets or filling stations) or municipalities.

JOLT will directly operate all ultra-fast charging stations in the network.

The Jolt Energy Group is a company based in Dublin, Munich and Boston, founded in 2017 by a team of former automotive and energy-technology executives with the aim of challenging traditional conventions of urban charging. JOLT's mission is to build a network of high-performance charging stations in major cities over the next ten years. JOLT uses advanced mobile charging stations with integrated batteries to compensate for the shortcomings of the existing power grid. In some cases, this means operating the charging stations on city streets like mobile-phone batteries and swapping them for freshly charged units when they run out.
