Heat Pump in an EV: More Efficiency for Greater Range

In winter, it becomes particularly clear how much temperature and climate control can affect an EV’s energy consumption. If you want to get into a warm car in the morning, the energy needed to heat the interior comes from the traction battery – leaving less available for driving. A heat pump can make heating an EV more efficient. But how does the technology work, how much can it affect range, and is it worthwhile for every driving profile?

How Does a Heat Pump Work in an EV?

The basic principle is similar to that of a heat pump used in a building: the system draws on existing thermal energy from the surroundings or vehicle components and raises it to a usable temperature via a refrigerant circuit. Rather than generating heat solely through electrical resistance, it transfers and makes use of heat that is already available.

What Is the Technology Used For?

In an EV, a heat pump is primarily used to heat the cabin as efficiently as possible. Depending on the model, however, it may also perform other functions and form part of the thermal management system for the battery, powertrain and air conditioning. This allows different areas of the vehicle to be brought to the required temperature as needed. The exact role of the heat pump varies depending on the vehicle model and its technical design.

How Does a Heat Pump Affect Range and Energy Consumption?

The practical benefits of a heat pump become particularly apparent when comparing different driving patterns. On short journeys, the energy required for climate control is relatively high compared with the distance travelled. On longer journeys, this proportion is generally lower because, once the desired cabin temperature has been reached, the system only needs to maintain it. Driving style and individual comfort settings also play a role. As a result, there is no single figure for the potential range benefit, as it varies depending on how and under what conditions the vehicle is used.

EV With or Without a Heat Pump: When Is It Worthwhile?

Whether a heat pump is worthwhile in an EV depends largely on your individual driving profile. If you regularly drive in colder temperatures, frequently cover longer distances or want to preserve as much winter range as possible, you may benefit from more efficient heating. If you mainly drive in a mild climate or cover relatively few miles each year, the advantage may be less significant.

It is also important to remember that not every heat pump operates with the same efficiency in very cold conditions. In tests carried out at minus 10 degrees Celsius, ADAC found no significant efficiency advantage for the heat pumps tested compared with simpler heating systems. At milder winter temperatures, however, conditions may be more favourable for the technology.

Retrofitting and Maintaining a Heat Pump: What You Need to Know

Retrofitting a heat pump to an EV generally involves considerable technical effort. The system is closely integrated with the refrigerant circuit, air conditioning, electronics and thermal management system. If a heat pump is important to you, it is therefore worth checking before buying a vehicle whether it is included as standard or available as an optional extra.

When it comes to maintenance, always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the specific model. Because the heat pump and climate control system can be technically interconnected, any noticeable reduction in heating or cooling performance should be inspected by a qualified specialist.

Drive and Charge Efficiently: Get More From Your EV

A heat pump is just one part of efficient electric driving. Pre-conditioning the vehicle while it is plugged in, keeping the cabin at a moderate temperature, adapting your speed and planning your route carefully can all help reduce energy consumption. In winter, it is also worth planning charging stops with a sufficient buffer.

When you need to add range quickly while you are out and about, a well-developed charging infrastructure supports this efficient approach. JOLT focuses on fast charging in urban areas, providing additional charging options where EV drivers need them in everyday life. In this way, efficient vehicle technology and convenient charging work hand in hand.
