Germany’s GHG quota for EV drivers: How to claim your payment
Anyone who drives an all-electric car can secure a financial benefit in 2026 too. Neither complicated calculations nor receipts for the amount of electricity actually charged are required. What matters is knowing the requirements, choosing a suitable provider and keeping an eye on the applicable deadline.
What is the GHG quota?
THG is the German abbreviation for greenhouse gas. Companies that put fossil fuels on the market must gradually reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Electricity for electric vehicles can count towards the statutory greenhouse gas reduction quota.
As the registered owner of a fully electric car, you can market a standardised quantity of electricity and the resulting greenhouse gas reduction through a service provider. The provider pools claims from numerous vehicle owners and sells the quantities of electricity certified by Germany's Federal Environment Agency to companies obliged to meet the quota. You then receive part of the proceeds as a greenhouse gas quota bonus. The Federal Environment Agency checks and certifies the eligible electricity quantities, but does not pay out the bonus itself.
Who can receive the GHG payment for EVs?
The GHG bonus for electric cars generally applies to fully battery-electric vehicles registered in the relevant calendar year. What matters is who is listed as the registered keeper in Part I of the vehicle registration certificate.
You may also be able to apply for a leased vehicle or a car subscription if you are officially registered as the keeper. Plug-in hybrids, on the other hand, are excluded because they also have a combustion engine. The GHG quota can be marketed once per calendar year for each eligible vehicle.
Which documents do you need?
To register, you generally need only a few details and documents. The most important document is a legible copy or photo of your registration certificate, Part I. It must clearly show, among other things, the registered keeper's details, the dates of first and current registration, the vehicle identification number and the vehicle class.
In addition, the service provider usually asks for your contact details and bank account information for the subsequent payout. Only submit personal data over a secure connection. Also check whether the provider clearly explains how long your data is stored and what it is used for.
How to apply for the GHG payment
The application is usually completed entirely online in just a few steps:
- Choose a suitable GHG quota provider.
- Register with your personal details.
- Upload Part I of your vehicle registration certificate.
- Commission the provider to market the credit.
- Wait for the review, certificate and payout.
The service provider submits the aggregated vehicle data to the German Environment Agency. After a successful review, it receives a certificate for the eligible quantity of electricity. It can then sell the quota and arrange for your agreed greenhouse gas quota bonus to be paid out.
Payment amounts and payouts: It pays to compare
The amount of the greenhouse gas quota bonus is not fixed by law. It fluctuates with supply and demand in the quota market, so the potential amount may change during the year. Intermediaries' fees and business models also affect how much ultimately reaches your account.
When comparing offers, do not focus solely on the highest advertised amount. Some providers pay a fixed guaranteed bonus, while others offer a variable model with potential bonus payments. Also check the expected processing time, possible fees, contract commitments and automatic-renewal terms. A guaranteed sum may be easier to plan around than a higher but nonbinding estimate.
Besides the potential GHG bonus, it is worth looking at the ongoing costs of electric mobility. Especially when charging in public, the tariff, charging power and payment method can affect the price.
Mistakes to avoid
Incomplete or blurry documents can delay processing. Before uploading, check that all the information on your vehicle registration certificate is clearly legible. A name that does not match or an incorrect licence plate number may also prompt further questions.
Do not register the same vehicle with several intermediaries either. The greenhouse gas reduction quota for electric cars can only be claimed once per calendar year. Read the fine print before signing up too: some contracts renew automatically and transfer marketing rights to the provider for several years. If you want to remain flexible, avoid such a commitment.
When is the deadline to apply for 2026?
The flat-rate electricity quantity for a purely electric vehicle must be reported to the German Environment Agency by November 15, 2026 at the latest. However, this deadline applies to applicants, who are often the service providers they have commissioned. They need enough time to collect, check and submit vehicle data in batches. Many providers therefore set a considerably earlier internal deadline.
Anyone wondering about the deadline for claiming the GHG premium should therefore follow the requirements of their chosen intermediary directly. Registering early reduces the risk of missing the application deadline.
