EV Preconditioning: How to Charge Faster
EV preconditioning explained: preheat your battery, charge faster, and protect your pack. => Charge ultra-fast with JOLT today!

What is EV battery preconditioning?
You pull up at a fast charging station, plug in the cable, and the charging power climbs painfully slowly? Often the problem is not the station but the temperature of your battery. This is where EV battery preconditioning makes a big difference.
It ensures your battery is at operating temperature at exactly the right moment so you can charge at full speed!
What does EV battery preconditioning mean?
Preconditioning means deliberately adjusting the temperature of the traction battery before charging or setting off. Your vehicle actively brings the battery into its optimal temperature range. Depending on the outside temperature, it heats or cools the battery. In winter, preheating an electric car's battery takes center stage because a cold battery limits both range and charging speed.
In short, preparing the battery for fast charging means bringing it to the condition in which it can absorb the most electricity in the shortest time.
Why your battery needs the right temperature
Lithium-ion batteries perform best within a narrow temperature range of around 20 to 40 degrees Celsius. Within this range, lithium ions move easily, internal resistance stays low and the cells absorb energy quickly.
When temperatures fall, the difference is noticeable. The electrolyte becomes more viscous, ions move more slowly and internal resistance increases. The battery management system (BMS) responds by reducing charging power as a protective measure. Charging a cold battery at full power risks so-called lithium plating: metallic lithium deposits on the anode, permanently reducing capacity. The reduced charging power is therefore not a fault but a precaution that helps the battery last longer.
Preheating your EV battery: how it works
Modern electric cars use various methods to bring the battery up to the right temperature:
- PTC heating elements warm a coolant that circulates evenly through the battery.
- Heat pumps operate particularly efficiently and use both ambient heat and waste heat.
- Waste heat from the motor and electronics is intelligently fed into the thermal circuit.
There are two ways to get started. Either preconditioning starts automatically as soon as you enter a fast-charging station as your destination in the navigation system; the vehicle calculates your arrival time and begins heating in good time. Or you activate preconditioning manually at the press of a button or via the manufacturer's app.
Preparing your battery for fast charging: the speed advantage
The effect is clearly measurable. An ice-cold battery often accepts only a fraction of its maximum power. At a 300 kW station, you might end up charging at a meagre 50 kW. A preconditioned battery, on the other hand, makes full use of the station's potential and achieves several times that power. Specifically, this has the following advantages:
- Shorter stops at the charging station because full charging power is available immediately
- More range in everyday use, because a warm battery works more efficiently
- Stronger regenerative braking, meaning better energy recovery when braking
- Longer cell life thanks to gentler charging sessions

How to activate preconditioning properly
A few simple habits will help you get the most out of preconditioning. Plan your route using the navigation system and select the charging station as your destination. The vehicle will then precondition its battery automatically. If automatic preconditioning is not available, manually start warming the battery around 20 to 40 minutes before your charging stop.
A practical tip: Preheat the battery while the car is still connected to your wallbox at home. That way, the energy comes from the grid rather than the battery, and you set off with full range and a battery at the ideal temperature.
