Charging an EV in hot weather: what to keep in mind this summer
As temperatures rise, everyday life with an electric car changes too: the cabin heats up faster, the air conditioning runs more often and the battery operates under different conditions than on mild days. There is no need for electric-car drivers to worry, but it is worth being a little more mindful about charging. Even in high temperatures, you can charge your electric car reliably if you know what to watch out for. With the right routines, you stay flexible, protect the battery and arrive comfortably even on hot days.
Why high temperatures can affect charging
When you charge your electric car in summer, the vehicle manages more than just the flow of electricity into the battery. Its thermal management system also makes sure the battery does not get too hot. This matters because batteries perform best within a particular temperature range.
If the car has stood in direct sunlight for a long time or has been driven hard on the motorway, the battery may heat up further. At such times, the vehicle may automatically reduce its charging power. Charging then takes a little longer, but the battery is protected from excessive strain. Different charging behaviour in summer is therefore usually not a problem but a protective feature of the battery management system.
Charging your EV in summer: practical everyday tips
To charge your electric car properly in hot weather, choose the location and time carefully. Charging spaces in the shade, in an underground car park or at locations where the vehicle is not exposed to direct sunlight for long periods are particularly comfortable. This puts less thermal strain on the battery and prevents the interior from heating up unnecessarily.
The time you charge can also make a noticeable difference in summer. If it fits your daily routine, it is best to charge in the morning or evening to avoid the intense midday heat. Planning ahead also helps. Do not wait until the battery is almost empty: make use of convenient charging opportunities in everyday life. That way you avoid unnecessary stress and keep the battery within a moderate charge range.
What matters when fast charging on hot days
Fast charging is a practical option in summer when you want to get back on the road quickly. On particularly hot days, however, it pays to time the charging session well. An electric car usually charges most efficiently in the middle of its battery range, roughly between 20 and 80%. After that, charging power often drops because the car protects the battery and charges the last few percentage points more slowly. If you want to charge quickly in hot weather, shorter, more targeted sessions can therefore make more sense than fully charging every time.
JOLT's urban fast-charging stations make it easy to fit these short charging breaks into everyday life, for instance while shopping, during an appointment or on the way into town.
How to protect your battery in summer
If you want to protect your electric car's battery in summer, simple habits matter most. If possible, avoid leaving the vehicle in direct sunlight for many hours with the battery almost full. If you are not setting off until the next day, it may make sense to schedule charging. That way, the battery only reaches the desired charge shortly before departure and does not remain fully charged for longer than necessary.
Preconditioning is also useful if your vehicle offers this feature. It cools the cabin before departure while the car is still connected to the charging station. Depending on the model, the battery can also be prepared. This makes setting off more comfortable, reduces energy consumption while driving and helps you use your electric car more efficiently in warm weather.
