Charging won’t start: What you can do now
You plug in, wait for the familiar click – and nothing happens. Charging does not start, the display remains dark and your schedule is thrown off. The good news first: in the vast majority of cases there is a simple cause that you can fix yourself in a matter of minutes.
In this article, we show you step by step what to do if your electric car will not charge: from a quick visual inspection to contacting support.
Why charging does not start: The most common causes
A failed start is rarely due to an actual defect. It is often caused by one of the following:
- Connection and locking: The plug is not fully inserted or the lock has not engaged.
- Authentication: authorisation via app, charging card or credit card has not been completed.
- Vehicle settings: An active charging timer or a charging limit that has been reached will prevent the session from starting.
- Battery temperature: An extremely cold or hot battery slows or temporarily stops charging.
- Software: The vehicle or charging station is slow to respond and needs to be restarted.
- Equipment on site: the charging station is not working because it is offline or reporting a fault.
Quick help: A step-by-step guide when your EV will not charge
Work through these points in order. Often, the very first step is enough.
1. Check the connection and plug
Unplug the connector and push it firmly back in until you hear it click. Check both ends of the cable for dirt, ice or damage. Sometimes locking and unlocking the car again will also release a blockage.
2. Check authentication and payment
Make sure that authorisation was actually confirmed. Hold your charging card steady against the reader or restart the session in the app. Also check that your payment method is saved and valid: an expired card is a common reason why charging will not start.
3. Check the vehicle's charging settings
Many electric cars have scheduled charging times or a departure timer. If this feature is active, the car deliberately waits, making it look as though it is not charging. Disable the timer for this charging session or check whether the set charge limit has already been reached.
4. Consider temperature and battery condition
In cold weather, the battery management system protects the cells and delays fast charging. Condition the battery by driving a short distance before charging or using preconditioning. After a few minutes, charging will usually start on its own.
5. Restart the system
If none of that helps, try restarting. End the session, disconnect and switch the vehicle completely off for a moment. Then start the charging process again.

When the charging station really is not working
If charging still does not work after all these steps, the station itself may be the cause. Here's what to do:
- Read the error message: Write down the code or status message displayed on the screen.
- Try another connector: Test a second plug or a neighbouring charging point.
- Contact support: Report the fault to the operator. Have the station ID, which you can find on the unit, ready.
A reliable charge point operator (CPO) often detects faults remotely and can resolve many problems without anyone needing to visit the site.
