Battery Management System: Charging Infrastructure

Battery management systems: Key to the urban mobility transition

Electric mobility is transforming our city centres, but grid infrastructure must keep pace. Ultra-fast charging requires enormous amounts of energy in a short time. To deliver this power safely and efficiently without overloading the grid, every modern lithium-ion battery needs a central control unit: the battery management system.

It acts as a digital brain behind the scenes, protecting sensitive cells and enabling pioneering charging solutions for urban areas. At JOLT, this technology controls our battery-buffered fast-charging stations to bring highly dynamic charging straight into city centres.

How the BMS keeps batteries efficient

The primary function of a BMS is to monitor the condition of the entire energy storage system in real time and regulate it with mathematical precision. A modern battery management system performs tasks that go far beyond simply charging and discharging.

The system continuously monitors two fundamental parameters:

  • Monitoring the exact charge level via the State of Charge (SoC)
  • Analysis of the battery's overall condition and ageing through its State of Health (SoH)

The software also controls thermal management. Because extreme temperatures can cause lasting damage to the cells, active temperature control ensures that the battery always stays within its optimal operating range.

If the sensors detect critical values, the system intervenes immediately. It instantly reduces the current or initiates an automatic safety shutdown to protect people and equipment without compromise.

This consistently prevents critical thermal runaway, or uncontrolled overheating. Cell balancing is just as important: this automatic equalisation prevents cell drift by distributing charge evenly across all cells, thereby preserving the maximum overall capacity over time.

How the battery management system protects during continuous use

Precise battery management in an electric car protects its battery from premature degradation during everyday driving. But this principle is just as important at the charging station itself. When electric vehicles charge at high power, enormous currents flow to enable ultra-fast charging. Drivers can easily check their EV's charging status in the JOLT app.

The charging station's battery management system monitors these processes continuously to prevent deep discharges, overloads and short circuits immediately. It protects the installed hardware and maintains consistently high reliability at charging points during continuous urban use.

Smart battery storage management for stable power grids

In practice, the rapid expansion of urban charging infrastructure often runs up against the capacity limits of local power grids. Expanding the grid, however, takes valuable years. JOLT resolves this conflict with innovative fast-charging stations such as MerlinOne and ChargeBox, which have integrated battery storage. With charging power of up to 360 kW, vehicles can take on enough electricity here for 200 km of range in just 10 minutes.

The integrated battery storage controller tackles this task through highly efficient peak shaving:

  • The battery management system slowly charges the station's internal 200 kWh storage unit when the low-voltage grid is already under little strain.
  • As soon as a vehicle begins charging, the stored energy is released in an instant without placing a sudden load on the local power grid.
  • As an intelligent energy store, JOLT's network thus stabilizes the power grids in real time and directly balances fluctuating renewable-energy production.

Actively shaping the future of urban mobility

An intelligent battery management system provides the technological foundation for widespread, reliable electric mobility in urban areas. It addresses the systemic tension between high charging power and limited grid stability at its source.
