EV Air Conditioning: How Much Does Your Range Really Drop in Summer?
As temperatures climb and the asphalt shimmers, drivers long for a refreshing breeze. But for many electric vehicle drivers, a quiet worry often lingers: doesn’t EV air conditioning consume an enormous amount of battery capacity? How much does the cooling system actually affect the real-world range of an EV in the summer?
In this article, we dispel the myths, provide you with solid facts about the actual consumption of electric vehicles, and show you how you can drive through the hot season completely relaxed thanks to an innovative and urban EV charging infrastructure.
The facts: How much power EV air conditioning needs in summer
To get straight to the point: the impact of cooling on your range is much lower than many assume. Unlike heating in winter, which often requires significantly more energy, modern air conditioning systems in electric vehicles operate extremely efficiently.
- The normal scenario (approx. 25°C): On warm days with moderate cooling requirements, EV air conditioning usually consumes only about 0.5 to 1.0 kWh per 100 km extra. This translates to a manageable range loss of just a few kilometres over a distance of 100 km.
- Extreme heat (over 30°C): When the vehicle is very hot and needs maximum cooling, the additional energy requirement rises to about 1 to 2 kWh per 100 km. Depending on the vehicle, outside temperature, solar radiation, and cooling needs, the range can drop by about 5% to 15% in severe heat.
- In traffic jams: Even if you are stuck in traffic for hours in midsummer, the air conditioning draws an average of about 1.3 to 1.5 kW of power. A standstill lasting several hours will therefore only cost you a manageable portion of your battery capacity, completely without local emissions, unlike a combustion engine idling.
Windows down or air conditioning on: Which is more efficient?
One of the most common questions regarding electric vehicle consumption in summer is: should I open the window to save power? The answer depends on your speed:
- In city traffic (up to approx. 50 km/h): Here, it can actually be worthwhile to roll down the windows and turn off the air conditioning. At these low speeds, the aerodynamic drag is so small that open windows can be more efficient.
- On country roads and motorways (from approx. 70 km/h): Close the windows and switch on the EV air conditioning! At higher speeds, open windows cause greater air turbulence, which significantly increases aerodynamic drag. In the end, this can cost more energy and range than the efficient air conditioning of your EV.
3 clever tips: Optimising your EV’s range in summer
Want to get the most out of your battery? Keep cool and drive further with these simple strategies:
- Pre-condition at the charging cable: Cool down your EV while it is still plugged into the charging station. This way, the energy for the initial cooling is drawn directly from the grid power rather than your vehicle’s battery. (Learn more about charging processes here!)
- Parking in the shade pays off: Parking your car in a car park or under trees significantly reduces interior heating. This relieves the cooling system enormously.
- Use air recirculation mode: Once the interior reaches a comfortable temperature, switch to air recirculation. The system will not have to constantly cool down hot outside air, but will instead circulate the already cooled air very efficiently.
